China’s September Car Market: A Higher NEV Share in a Smaller Market
Source released 12 October 2026 · Observation: September 2026 · Analysis checked 13 October 2026 KST
A rising market share can coexist with falling sales. China’s September passenger-car figures make that distinction especially important: new energy vehicles lost fewer retail sales than the market overall, while exports followed a different path.
Keep three selling stages separate
The China Passenger Car Association’s report, published by the China Automobile Dealers Association, distinguishes domestic retail from manufacturers’ wholesale sales and exports. The following uses that official release’s figures consistently, rather than combining different preliminary press tallies.
On a narrow screen, scroll the table sideways. Keyboard users can focus the table region and use the arrow keys.
| September measure | Reported level | Year-on-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic passenger-car retail | 1.618 million | −28.0% |
| NEV domestic retail | 1.084 million | −16.7% |
| Manufacturer wholesale | 2.549 million | −8.9% |
| Passenger-car exports, including CKD kits | 0.917 million | +73.7% |
Source: CPCA September market report, released 12 October. NEV includes battery-electric and plug-in vehicles, including extended-range models. It is not a synonym for battery-electric alone. CKD means completely knocked-down assembly kits.
Text alternative: total retail retained 72.0% of its year-earlier volume; NEV retail retained 83.3%. The common chart maximum is 100.
The arithmetic of gaining share during a decline
Imagine a fictional market selling 100 cars, of which 60 are in one category. In the next period, total sales fall to 80 and category sales fall to 56. The category has lost four sales, yet its share rises from 60% to 70%. Its customers did not buy more cars; other categories contracted faster.
Illustrative second-period share = 56 / 80 = 70%
Category volume change = 56 / 60 − 1 = −6.7%
Share change = 70% − 60% = +10 percentage points
This example is deliberately invented. It explains the mechanism without pretending to reconstruct the previous year from rounded totals. A supplier judging its addressable market needs units as well as share. A component maker could serve a category gaining competitive position while still facing fewer domestic vehicles needing its parts.
Wholesale resilience answers another question
Retail is closest to the final domestic buyer in this comparison. Wholesale records a different stage in the distribution chain. Exports can support factory shipments even when the home market contracts. Adding exports to wholesale would count an included channel again. Subtracting retail from wholesale also does not, by itself, produce a reliable inventory change.
An inventory bridge needs opening and closing stocks, production or inbound deliveries, and sales or outbound deliveries on the same boundaries. Timing, assembly kits and distribution-stage coverage can break a shortcut. The correct response to a missing bridge is to leave the inventory conclusion open, rather than label the whole difference unsold cars.
Choose the decision you are examining
I supply parts to Chinese factories. Which denominator matters?
Start with production or manufacturer deliveries for the relevant models and powertrains. Then separate their domestic and export destinations. A domestic retail share cannot tell you the exact factory order book, and a national total cannot reveal your customer’s procurement schedule.
I am comparing demand in China with another country. What must match?
Match passenger cars versus all vehicles, retail versus wholesale, powertrain definitions and the same period. Conventional non-plug-in hybrids should not be silently moved into the Chinese NEV category. State whether imported cars and assembly kits are included in each source.
I want to know whether the industry is more profitable. Is this enough?
No. Vehicle counts do not provide transaction prices, discounts, material costs, warranty costs or financing income. A shift toward exports may alter margins in either direction. Company accounts and route-specific costs are needed before drawing an earnings conclusion.
What this snapshot establishes
The useful reading is a channel-and-denominator check. Domestic customer demand, relative powertrain share and factory shipment resilience are separate measurements. A convincing recovery assessment would follow comparable units over several periods, then examine realised prices and profitability. This report supplies one month of industry data, not a valuation or a forecast for any manufacturer.
Calculation notes and limits
Rounded current NEV share: 1.084 / 1.618 × 100 = 67.00%
The source reports 67.0% NEV retail share. Calculations use rounded published inputs. The two indexed bars use different underlying denominators and cannot be added. This analysis does not attribute the changes to a single cause, or infer profit from exports.
