KOSPI Enters the 5,000s: How Far Is 5,000 Now?
The break below 6,000 makes the downside question more urgent. At the 11:13 KST morning snapshot, however, reaching 5,000 still required another 16.51% decline.
Our assessment: downward pressure deserves more weight in short-horizon risk planning after the morning selloff. The evidence does not support a calibrated percentage chance of touching 5,000 over the next 5, 20 or 60 trading sessions. A recovery above 6,000 is a much smaller price move than a fall to 5,000; neither distance alone establishes likelihood.

01 / What actually happened
The 5,000s are a range; 5,000 is a separate threshold
In this article, “the 5,000s” means 5,000.00 through 5,999.99. Aju reported 5,998.16 at 10:25 KST. Later reports placed the index at 5,990.08 at 11:08 and 5,988.41 at 11:13. These establish morning trading below 6,000, without establishing a touch of 5,000 or the exact first-crossing second.

| Observation, KST | KOSPI | What the observation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| October 12 close | 6,384.24 | Completed prior-session reference |
| October 13 open | 6,186.08 | An opening gap of −3.10% |
| 10:25 | 5,998.16 | Below 6,000; already inside the 5,000s |
| 11:08 | 5,990.08 | Later corroborating morning observation |
| 11:13 | 5,988.41 | Anchor for every calculation below |
Aju: 10:25 observation; published 10:26 · Dailian: 11:08 observation; published 11:18 · The Fact: 11:13 observation; published 11:26. Reports attribute market data to KRX; multiple reports are corroboration, not independent price feeds.
The morning report also recorded a low so far of 5,950.00. It is a reference for that reporting window, not the final session low or a guaranteed support level. By comparison, the earlier article published this morning used a 09:10 observation of 6,098.63. The later snapshot was 110.22 points, or 1.81%, below that earlier observation. This is an observed intraday change. The earlier article’s 5,000 case was a stress exercise without an assigned hit probability. The new range entry cannot be scored as a successful 5,000 forecast.
Separate official cross-check: the KRX homepage displayed KOSPI 5,932.90 (−7.07%) when collected around 12:49 KST. The extracted page did not show a quote timestamp. This later collection is not relabeled as an 11:13 observation, a live 12:49 quote, or a closing value.
02 / Price, participation and market mechanics
Selling pressure is visible; its cause needs more evidence
The Fact’s report around the 11:13 snapshot recorded foreign KOSPI net selling of KRW 2.2226 trillion, alongside retail buying of KRW 1.2077 trillion and institutional buying of KRW 0.7916 trillion. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix were down 7.39% and 8.04%, respectively. Those are same-report observations; the article does not separately timestamp every flow and stock price.
The three investor categories do not exhaust the full market classification. Foreign net sales should not be interpreted as an equal-sized cash withdrawal from Korea: purchases, sales, reinvestment and cross-border currency conversion are different measurements.
| Market or event | Observation time, KST | Verified context |
|---|---|---|
| KOSDAQ | 11:14 | 812.44, down 4.33%; one minute later than the KOSPI anchor |
| KOSPI market breadth | 10:27 | 828 decliners versus 71 advancers; an earlier cross-section |
| USD/KRW | 11:00 | 1,337.8 KRW per USD; an earlier FX quote |
| Sell-side sidecar | 09:47:58 | KOSPI200 futures 955.02; program sell-order effectiveness paused for five minutes |
The Fact · Newsis: breadth at 10:27 · YTN: FX at 11:00 · Yonhap: 09:47:58 sidecar.
Broad morning weakness makes a purely two-stock explanation incomplete. Yet a constituent contribution study is needed to quantify how much of the index loss came from the largest chipmakers. Likewise, a sidecar describes a program-trading safeguard. It is not a full-market halt and supplies no calibrated probability of another crash. KRX’s sidecar rule explains the five-minute mechanism.
For international readers, a falling KOSPI plus foreign equity sales is insufficient evidence of a collapse in international confidence. That conclusion would require aligned evidence on bond investment, currency funding, credit risk and market access. We also avoid assigning the Korean morning move to a US session or an FX shock without synchronized, verified observations.
03 / The arithmetic of the remaining move
A lower starting point changes the hurdle
At 5,988.41, a move to 5,000 is 988.41 points away. The useful calculation is target divided by the morning anchor, minus one. The same calculation shows why a small bounce through 6,000 would provide only limited evidence of a durable reversal.
| Reference or scenario | Move from 5,988.41 | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| 5,000.00 | -16.51% | Fixed downside threshold |
| 5,500.00 | -8.16% | Intermediate stress marker |
| 5,800.00 | -3.15% | Round-number observation level |
| 5,950.00 | -0.64% | Low reported in the morning window |
| 6,000.00 | +0.19% | Upper boundary of the 5,000s |
| 6,186.08 | +3.30% | Opening level |
| 6,200.00 | +3.53% | Illustrative rebound endpoint |
| 6,384.24 | +6.61% | Recovery of the prior close |
A loss and the recovery needed to reverse it are asymmetric: the observed 6.20% decline from 6,384.24 requires a 6.61% rise from 5,988.41 to regain that close. The index itself is a price measure. Fund returns can additionally reflect fees, distributions, tracking differences and an international investor’s currency exposure.
04 / Five, twenty and sixty sessions
How severe would the path have to be?
The horizon is essential. A 5,000 touch at any moment within a window and a closing value at or below 5,000 at its end are different events. A touch can occur and reverse before the final close. We estimate neither event’s probability here.
The following table backsolves the constant compounded step return needed to finish at each level after 5, 20 or 60 subsequent trading-session closes. It is a pace comparison, not a forecast of a smooth daily path. Step 1 ends at the close of the first trading session after October 13; the October 13 close is not counted. The initial intraday-to-next-session interval is treated as one step.
| Terminal level | Total move | 5 steps | 20 steps | 60 steps |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5,000.00 | -16.51% | -3.543% | -0.898% | -0.300% |
| 5,500.00 | -8.16% | -1.687% | -0.424% | -0.142% |
| 6,200.00 | +3.53% | +0.697% | +0.174% | +0.058% |
| 6,384.24 | +6.61% | +1.288% | +0.321% | +0.107% |
Required step return = (target / 5,988.41)1/N − 1
The five-step 5,000 scenario needs about −3.543% each step, compounded. Over twenty steps, the equivalent is −0.898%; over sixty, −0.300%. Extending the window lowers the required pace but does not provide a probability. Real paths include gaps, reversals and changes in volatility.

05 / Technical evidence and its limits
The trend is weak; “oversold” is not a rebound timetable
The saved sample contains 20 completed daily KOSPI bars from September 9 through October 12. From those closes, the 5-, 10- and 20-session averages were 6,751.84, 6,841.01 and 6,853.52. The 11:13 morning anchor sits 12.62% below that previous-session 20-day average. Today’s unfinished observation has not been inserted as a daily closing bar.
The sample-based 14-period RSI is 29.35, but dropping the first observation changes the seeded reading to 30.37. That sensitivity crosses the conventional 30 threshold. With only five recursive updates after initialization, a rigid “below 30 means buy” interpretation is especially fragile. RSI can remain low in a persistent downtrend. Daily-history source · RSI methodology and limitations.
The similarly short-seeded ATR is 168.97 points. The distance from 5,988.41 to 5,000 equals about 5.85 of those prior-session ATR units. ATR measures recent range; it is neither a standard deviation nor a probability distribution. “5.85 ATR away” therefore cannot be translated into a tail probability or a number of days. ATR methodology.
Do not count the same signal three times. The break below 6,000, a low RSI and price below its moving averages are overlapping transformations of the same price history. They are not three independent confirmations suitable for multiplying probabilities.
Useful confirmation would come from genuinely additional evidence: sustained improvement in market breadth, stabilization in foreign cash and futures positioning, and forward earnings revisions. A close-based review can then test whether a rebound survives beyond intraday noise.
06 / What would justify another leg lower?
Backsolve the earnings and valuation pressure
For a transparent stress test, normalize an index earnings-capacity proxy and valuation factor to 1.00 at the morning anchor. Hold the index composition and aggregation convention fixed. Then:
These factors are hypothetical. We have not verified a same-horizon aggregate forward EPS or consensus P/E, and this is not a fair-value model. The table asks what combination would mathematically produce 5,000.
| Assumed earnings-proxy change | Required valuation-factor change | Result |
|---|---|---|
| +0.00% | -16.51% | 5,000.00 |
| -5.00% | -12.11% | 5,000.00 |
| -10.00% | -7.23% | 5,000.00 |
| -15.00% | -1.77% | 5,000.00 |
A 10% earnings downgrade plus a 7.23% valuation contraction would reach the threshold. A 10% reduction in both factors gives 4,850.61, a 19.00% decline. These examples explain how two moderate-looking shocks can compound; they do not show that either shock is occurring or likely.
The investment question is whether earnings durability can offset the price investors require for risk. The useful stress-testing discipline is to keep the base fixed, change explicit drivers, identify the breakpoint and show what must be true. A lower index alone cannot distinguish an earnings revision from multiple compression, forced position reduction or a mix of all three.
07 / What can responsibly be said about probability?
No defensible percentage from this evidence set
Working judgment: the morning deterioration strengthens the case for monitoring continued downside, while evidence of a durable recovery remains incomplete. It does not establish that 5,000 is the most likely endpoint over any of the three horizons. A probability such as “70%” would imply a calibration that this research does not possess.
The historical sample contains only 19 daily returns and excludes earlier market regimes. It cannot provide even one fully observed 20- or 60-session forward test. A robust estimate would require a longer, quality-checked series, explicit intraday-touch and terminal-close labels, enough comparable stress episodes, out-of-sample or walk-forward validation, and uncertainty and model-sensitivity reporting. Resampling a tiny sample or simulating thousands of paths cannot create that missing evidence.
There is still a useful probability-shaped calculation: a break-even weight under an explicitly artificial two-endpoint scenario. It answers the weight required for the expected terminal index to equal today’s anchor, not the actual probability of either event.
| Assumed upside endpoint | Assumed downside endpoint | Required upside weight for break-even |
|---|---|---|
| 6,200.00 | 5,000.00 | 82.37% |
| 6,384.24 | 5,000.00 | 71.40% |
| 6,500.00 | 5,000.00 | 65.89% |
With only 6,200 and 5,000 as possible terminal outcomes, the break-even upside weight is 82.37%. The result is high because the modeled rebound is only 3.53%, while the modeled decline is 16.51%. Changing the upside endpoint changes the hurdle sharply. Real markets have many outcomes, and costs, dividends and currency moves are excluded. This exercise is not a recommendation to enter a position.
08 / Evidence that would change the assessment
Use observable conditions rather than a countdown
| Path to examine | Evidence over the next 5 sessions | What to reassess over 20–60 sessions |
|---|---|---|
| Continued decline | Repeated failures to sustain a recovery above 6,000; new lows beyond the morning reporting window; weak breadth and continued foreign selling | Persistent earnings downgrades or higher required risk premiums would strengthen the 5,500 and 5,000 stress cases |
| Stabilization / range | Closing levels stop making lower lows; participation improves; selling pressure eases across more than one observation | Whether forward earnings and funding conditions stop worsening; a range is not proof of a final bottom |
| Recovery | A sustained reclaim of 6,000, followed by evidence around the 6,186.08 opening reference and 6,200 scenario level | Durable breadth improvement and earnings support; recovering 6,384.24 would reverse the measured morning loss, not restore the longer-term trend |
These are monitoring conditions, not backtested entry rules. The 5,500, 5,800 and 6,200 levels are round-number scenario markers. None is presented as an empirically established support or resistance zone. Final closing data and a wider history are needed before upgrading a rebound into a trend claim.
Questions this update can answer
Did the earlier 5,000 forecast come true?
The earlier article supplied a stress threshold without calibrated odds. Morning trading in the 5,000s verifies a break below 6,000. A touch of 5,000 has not been established by this morning evidence.
Is a bounce above 6,000 enough to call a recovery?
Only a 0.19% rise is needed from the anchor. Such a move can occur within intraday noise. Persistence, breadth and earnings evidence matter more than one crossing.
What is the estimated chance of 5,000 within a month?
No numerical estimate is justified by the available sample. For a standardized 20-session illustration, ending at 5,000 requires a 16.51% total decline, equivalent to −0.898% per compounded step. Neither figure is an event probability, and 20 sessions is not an exact calendar month.
Does this report incorporate the afternoon or closing market?
No. All scenario calculations are frozen to 11:13 KST. The separately identified KRX homepage collection after 12:46 KST is a cross-check with an unspecified quote timestamp. The report makes no October 13 closing claim.
